Governing Council

The Governing Council is entrusted with ensuring the effectiveness of Seth Mokitimi Methodist Seminary (SMMS) in forming and training clergy in accordance with the Primary Vision of the Seminary.

The Council will consist of a maximum of 26 persons constituted as follows:

  • The Presiding Bishop
  • The Bishop of the Natal West District
  • The Bishop of the Natal Coastal District
  • The Lay President
  • The Chairperson of the Governing Council (who shall be appointed by the directors and members of the Seth Mokitimi Methodist Seminary [association incorporated under section 21] for a three-year term, renewable once)
  • The Vice-Chairperson of the Council (who shall be appointed by the directors and members of the Seth Mokitimi Methodist Seminary [association incorporated under section 21] for a three-year term, renewable once)
  • The Executive Secretary of Conference
  • The Lay General Treasurer
  • The President of SMMS
  • The Chairperson of the Board of Advisers of SMMS or his/her nominee
  • A representative of the EMMU General Committee
  • A representative of the Pietermaritzburg Cluster of Theological Institutions
  • A representative of the School of Religion, Philosophy and Classics, UKZN
  • A representative of Epworth School
  • A representative of the Pietermaritzburg Metro Circuit
  • A representative of the Edendale Circuit
  • A representative of the Pietermartitzburg & Howick Circuit
  • The Chairperson of the Seminarians’ Council elected by the Seminarians’ Council
  • One lay student representative elected by the Seminarians’ Council
  • Three Ministerial Representatives appointed by the MCSA Conference (who shall serve for a three-year term, renewable once)
  • Four Lay Representatives appointed by the MCSA Conference (who shall serve for a three-year term, renewable once)
  • The President may invite members of the teaching, administrative or support staff to be in attendance as required.
